WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR – GRADE III
Salary Range: $34,154.02 - $56,353.65

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs intermediate skilled work in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required.
 
Work is performed under regular supervision.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs minor maintenance and recommends changing minor operations, such as wasting rates, D.O. levels, etc;
  • Makes regular tours of plant and equipment assisting in plant operations;
  • Monitors gauges, meters, control panels, etc.;
  • Records readings from meters and instruments;
  • Checks functioning of equipment;
  • Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions;
  • Performs various tests; collects plant samples for process control;
  • Operates dewatering press;
  • Skims grease from settling tanks;
  • Pumps sludge, drains tanks, cleans clarifiers;
  • Cleans and services pumps, motors and other equipment;
  • Makes minor or emergency repairs; performs minor preventive maintenance on plant equipment;
  • Performs general plant maintenance duties;
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures in performing;
  • Performs related tasks as required or as assigned.
 
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, lifting, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to visually inspect mechanical parts for small defects; prepare and analyze data and figures, do extensive reading, and use measurement devices.  An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme cold and heat, noise; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to job hazards including exposure to chemicals and moving mechanical parts; and may be subject to wearing a respirator and working in narrow or confined spaces.  An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant; thorough knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; thorough knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to detect defects in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations; some skill in the use and care of hand tools.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment in a wastewater treatment plant; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a Grade III Wastewater Treatment Certificate; possession of a valid N.C. driver's license; may require possession of an appropriate Commercial Driver's License.
 
This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
