GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Perform intermediate protective service work in fire suppression; does related work as required.
 
Work is performed under regular supervision.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work;
  • Performs cleanup and overhaul work;
  • Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment and cleaning fire station and grounds; helps check all equipment and apparatus; performs simple and routine maintenance;
  • Participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical materials and attendance at scheduled drills and classes;
  • Inspects, cleans and maintains fire hoses, pumps, hydrants and related equipment;
  • Maintains physical fitness by actively participating in PT training;
  • Assists in the enforcement of fire codes; may instruct in training classes;
  • Prepares and submits required reports;
  • Conducts station tours for the public, schools and community;
  • Assists in conducting pre-planning studies;
  • May be assigned to a special area or projects as necessary, i.e. Hazardous Material Response, High Level Rescue or Confined Space Rescue;
  • Performs other firefighting and related emergency tasks consistent with standards for the position;
  • Tests hoses, breathing and related firefighting equipment;
  • Substitutes as Fire Lieutenant when required.
 
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to operate machinery and perform skilled tasks of a non-repetitive nature.  An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold; subject to hazards including exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to exposure to oils and cutting fluids; required to wear a respirator; and may be subject to frequently working in close quarters.  An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  General knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire suppression; general knowledge of fire prevention and pre-planning strategies and techniques; general knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; general knowledge of technical firefighting  principles and techniques; general knowledge of techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression; thorough knowledge of the street systems and physical layout of the City; general knowledge of hazardous materials and accident extrication principles and techniques; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public; possession of mechanical aptitude.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and some firefighting experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid N.C. driver's license; N.C FF II Certification or ability to obtain within a12 months probationary period; must obtain and maintain Hazmat Operation's Level Certification, Emergency Medical Technician Certification and SFD Driver/Operator Level III Certification; must meet and maintain the minimum training and experience qualifications for the position as established by the department.
 
This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.

  4. Provide a copy of a Career Readiness Certification (silver or a higher level).  This certification can be obtained through Mitchell Community College, or any local Community College.  This certification will be used in lieu of a written exam.  You may contact Mitchell Community College at 704-878-3220 for CRC testing preparation or to inquire about testing dates.  If you have previously completed the CRC test, there is no need for re-testing.  A certification never expires.
     
  5. Provide a copy of a DD 214, if you served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
     
  6. Provide a copy of a High School diploma, GED or College Degree.
     
  7. Provide a copy of a Firefighter Certification Transcript or transcript  from an IFSAC approved training agency.  In N.C. this transcript can be obtained through the www.ncdoi.com website.
     
  8. Provide verifications of ID and Eligibility of Employment as specified through the E-Verify process.
