POLICE TELECOMMUNICATOR

Salary Range: $32,256.83 - $53,670.03
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs intermediate technical and responsible clerical work on an assigned shift dispatching police personnel usually in response to emergency situations; does related work as required.
Work is performed under regular supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of the methods of operating the communication system; general knowledge of radio and telecommunications procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; some knowledge of federal and state regulations governing transmission by radio; ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to operate standard office equipment and personal computers; ability to speak distinctly; ability to deal with the public under stressful conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and some experience in radio communications; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of N.C. DCI certification or ability to obtain within 6 months probationary period.
This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.

- Receives incoming calls, classifies as to type, obtains detailed information and relays information;
- Operates two-way radio, telephone, recording devices and computer terminals;
- Receives complaints in person or by phone;
- Receives and transmits messages by radio and maintains radio log;
- Forwards information to state agencies and special units;
- Operates CAD system; enters and extracts data from system;
- Monitors telephone and 911 phone lines;
- Operates paging system console;
- Maintains wrecker log book within computer;
- Registers bicycles and mopeds;
- Operates standard office and computer terminal equipment;
- Enters and updates warrant information;
- Enters and updates entries in DCI and NCIC;
- Maintains vehicle repossession log;
- Performs driver history, checks reference citations for DA's office;
- Assists with maintaining geographical data base.
