GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs difficult skilled work on a variety of automotive equipment; does related work as required.
 
Work is performed under regular supervision.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Diagnoses and repairs malfunctions on a variety of systems;
  • Performs skilled repair and maintenance on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment such as solid waste trucks, construction equipment, bucket trucks, backhoe/loaders, street sweepers, police patrol vehicles, pickup trucks and other equipment;
  • Dissembles components, inspects parts for wear, repairs, replaces, overhauls, rebuilds and adjusts fuel and water pumps and carburetors.  Re-wires ignition systems, lights and instrument panels.  Relines and adjusts air and hydraulic brakes.  Aligns front ends, repairs and replaces shock absorbers;
  • Overhauls gasoline and diesel engines.  Maintains and repairs hydraulic systems.  Welds and fabricates vehicle parts and components;
  • Tunes and performs repairs on gasoline and diesel engine powered equipment to include troubleshooting and repair of electronic fuel injection and emission systems;
  • Repairs and replaces tires;
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment on a regular schedule
  • Uses a computer to maintain basic records and prepares basic reports.  Reads and comprehends service manuals.
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to visually inspect small parts to detect defects; assemble parts at distances close to the eye; and use measurement devices.  An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including vibrations and noise; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, oils and cutting fluids; and subject to job hazards including exposure to moving mechanical parts.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  General knowledge of the methods, tools, materials and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy equipment; general knowledge of hydraulics, electrical systems, computer management systems, air brakes, air operated accessories, welding and fabricating, as well as engine, transmission and drive train repair; ability to interpret work from sketches, diagrams and or charts.  Must be able to work evenings, nights, weekends and / or a modified work week.  Ability to utilize an automated fleet management information system to record work performed and to look up vehicle data.  Must be able to understand and follow instructions in both oral and written form.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and considerable experience in repairing automotive and power driven equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of an appropriate valid commercial driver's license.  Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required.
 
This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime
