GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs difficult technical work in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of electrical substation equipment; does related work as required. 
Work is performed under minimal supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Drives truck to various power substations to observe and make visual check of operation of substation equipment and document data;
  • Assists in the testing, repair and maintenance of electric meters;
  • Inspect, maintains, and repairs components related to the operation of transformers, switches, relays, insulators, fuses, lightning arrestors, voltage regulators and related equipment; makes repairs and adjustments to ensure satisfactory operations; replaces broken parts;
  • Checks for loose fittings and oil leaks;
  • Notifies supervisor and schedules work if major breakdown or extensive repairs are needed;
  • Assists with contracted maintenance and repairs in substations to meet preventative maintenance schedule and program;
  • Examines automatic controls and indicators to determine if specific voltage is being delivered and to determine the maximum and minimum power demands on the substation;
  • Ensures breakers, regulators, switches, relays and related power supply equipment operate within preset parameters;
  • Maintains written record of inspections and repairs to storage batteries;
  • Prepares report of inspections of substations;
  • Tests temperature controls of transformers; filters and tests transformer oil;
  • Performs routine maintenance tasks on buildings and grounds of substations;
  • Monitors and assists in the operation, maintenance and repair of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system;
  • Assists with PCB handling and disposal;
  • Performs related work as required.

JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves very heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activated related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze figures, visually inspect and detect flaws in small equipment parts, assemble parts at distances close to the eye, use a computer terminal and do extensive reading.  An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, hazards including exposure to moving mechanical parts and electric current, oils and cutting fluids, and working in close quarters or cramped areas.  An employee in this position could be “reasonably anticipated” as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of testing, calibrating, transformer/feeder loads and other substation related activities;  thorough knowledge of safety requirements and the hazards associated with the work; ability to understand and work from construction and wiring plans, blueprints and diagrams; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to detect malfunctions of substation equipment and to make repairs and adjustments; ability to prepare reports and maintain records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors; good physical condition.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  High school diploma and two year Associate Degree in  related field with  experience in substation or industrial electrical maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education and work experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid N.C. driver’s license.

This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
