Salary Range: $28,098.10 - $46,362.99 
 
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs difficult semi-skilled work and intermediate skilled work in a variety of construction, maintenance and repair assignments involving the use of specialized tools and equipment; does related work as required.
 
Work is performed under regular supervision.  Supervision may be exercised over assigned workers.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Acts as lead worker on projects;
  • Operates front end and deck mowers, turf tractors, backhoe, dump truck, and jack hammer;
  • Assists in ground and building maintenance;
  • Operates, maintains and repairs departmental equipment;
  • Must be able to make confined space entry;
  • Assists supervisors in planning and organizing work and training unskilled laborers;
  • Interacts with public in a professional manner;
  • Organizes and sets up daily work assignments;
  • Performs a variety of skilled tasks in departmental operations;
  • May require flexible scheduling;
  • Performs a variety of heavy manual work in connection with the repair, maintenance and construction of City infrastructure;
  • Must be able to assist in installation of trench shoring equipment, if required;
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures;
  • Performs other related tasks.
 
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned.  An employee in this position will be primarily exposed to outdoor environmental conditions including extreme cold and heat, vibration and noise; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to hazards including working around operating machinery and uneven surfaces; subject to coming in contact with cutting fluids and oils; occasionally required to wear a respirator or mask; and subject working in narrow or confined spaces.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of construction, maintenance and repair tasks; thorough knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work; ability to perform manual labor for extended period, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and considerable experience in maintenance, repair and/or construction work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid N.C. driver’s license; may require possession of an appropriate valid commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain within (6) months of employment.
 
This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
