SENIOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR
Salary Range: $39,537.06 - $65,237.12

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs intermediate semi-skilled work in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required.
 
Work is performed under regular supervision.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Fills in for the  Supervisor during absences and acts with the authority of the Supervisor in his absence; performs plant operations and administrative duties of both positions when required;
  • Makes regular tours of plant and equipment assisting the Plant Supervisor in plant operations, including residuals processing;
  • Monitors gauges, meters, control panels, etc;
  • Record readings from  meters and instruments;
  • Checks functioning of equipment;
  • Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions;
  • Performs various tests; takes process control and compliance monitoring samples;
  • Operates dewatering press; takes sludge to appropriate treatment location;
  • Skims grease from settling tanks;
  • Pumps sludge, drains tanks, cleans clarifies;
  • Cleans and services pumps, motors and other equipment;
  • Weighs and fills chemical containers;
  • Operates crawler/loader, tractor mowers, backhoe as required to maintain sludge disposal facilities;
  • Makes minor or emergency repairs;  perform  preventive maintenance on plant equipment;
  • Performs general plant maintenance duties;
  • Performs related tasks as required or assigned.
 
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves work requiring the employees to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures; visually inspect small parts for small defects; assemble parts at distances close to the eye; and use measurement devices.  An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme cold and heat, and noise; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to job hazards including exposure to chemicals and moving mechanical parts; and may be subject to wearing a respirator and working in narrow or confined spaces.  An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
 
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant; general knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; general knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to detect defects in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of plant operations; skill in the use and care of hand tools.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and some experience in operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment in a wastewater treatment plant; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Three (3) years experience at a Wastewater Treatment Plant.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid N.C. driver’s license. Possession of a Grade IV and Operator Certificate issued by the State of North Carolina or ability to obtain such. Ability to obtain Land Application Operator’s Certificate. A requirement of this position is to be on-call, to carry a pager, and to comply with all departmental policies including those concerning pager use.
 
This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
