GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Provide group fitness instruction, monitor and educate members on exercise and safety at City facility.  Position will provide support for full time staff in class participation and attendance records.  Weekend work is required on a rotating basis.  Requires ability to work effectively and independently with little supervision.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Instructs scheduled group fitness classes in a timely manner providing adequate warm-up, exercise and cool-down;
  • Maintain daily class roster and monitor attendance of class participants;
  • Prepare studio, equipment and supplies necessary for class prior to beginning of session;
  • Provide class appropriate music;
  • Utilize a variety of different types of fitness equipment;
  • Secure substitute for class when absent and notify full time staff no less than two hours prior to any substitutions for any reason;
  • Assist members, answer questions and maintain positive exercise environment for participants;
  • Report all problems with equipment, supplies, facility, etc immediately;
  • Communicate positively with all members, staff and the public;
  • Exercise good professional judgment at all times;
  • File and maintain accident reports
  • Attend staff meetings and training, as required;
  • Perform other related and assigned duties.
 
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: 
This position involves active work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently to move, lift or carry objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include reaching, walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures, do accounting functions, and use a computer terminal.  An employee in this position could be reasonably anticipated to come in contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials in the performance of their job duties.  Employee should be in good physical condition and have sufficient endurance to maintain demands of job.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of human anatomy and fitness instruction principles including incorporation of music, tempo, rhythm and cueing techniques; general knowledge of first aid practices and techniques; ability to adhere to program standards and objectives and to lead and instruct groups; ability to resolve disputes with firmness and impartiality; ability to meet and deal tactfully with the general public.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and current certification in CPR/First Aid/AED required.  Strong preference for certified instructors (ACE, AFAA) or equivalent.  Additional certifications and licenses are preferred, but not required.
