Salary Range: $28,098.10 - $46,362.99
 
 
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs intermediate semi-skilled work in the operation of dewatering equipment in a water/wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Makes regular tours of dewatering system and equipment; assists in plant operations; operates lime stabilization process;
  • Monitors gauges, meters, control panels, etc;
  • Records readings from meters and instruments;
  • Checks functioning of equipment;
  • Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves, and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions;
  • Collects sludge samples;
  • Performs various tests on sludge for dewatering efficiency and for proper lime stabilization;
  • Operates various dewatering units;
  • Pumps sludge, drains tanks, cleans clarifiers;
  • Cleans and services pumps, motors and other equipment;
  • Makes minor or emergency repairs; performs minor preventive maintenance on plant equipment;
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures;
  • Performs general plant maintenance duties and assists plant mnt. Mechanic with repairs & maintenance;
  • Assists in landscaping and grounds keeping;
  • Operates water/waste water treatment plant and complies with essential job function required by WTP/WWTP operator; operates plant as needed in event of absence of operator; may require shift work;
  • Must be able to enter confined space;
  • Performs other related tasks as required or assigned.
 
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures; visually inspect small parts for small defects; assemble parts at distance close to the eye; and use a computer terminal and measurement devices. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including noise; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to job hazards including exposure to chemicals and moving mechanical parts; and may be subject to wearing a respirator and working in narrow or confined spaces. An employee in this position could be “reasonably anticipated” as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  General knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water/wastewater treatment plant; general knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principals pertinent to water/wastewater treatment plant operations; general knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of operations; some skill in the use and care of hand tools; skill in the operation of medium to heavy motor equipment.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and extensive experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment in a water/wastewater treatment plant; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid appropriate N.C. driver’s license; possession of or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment the Grade I Wastewater Certificate or North Carolina Grade C surface certification as issued by the State.
 
This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
