GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs and supervises a variety of surveying activities in support of engineering design, construction projects and related assignments; does related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
 
  • Acts as party chief over survey crew;
  • Makes detailed surveys for construction projects as assigned, including street and sidewalk construction, utility construction and easement acquisition;
  • Performs as-built surveys of new construction projects;
  • Completes topographic surveys, property surveys, right-of-way surveys, construction staking, building elevation surveys, lease surveys, and property line identifications;
  • Prepares topographic maps, plats and easement documents;
  • Prepares annual Powell Bill map;
  • Revises maps, field notes and drawings;
  • Performs stormwater inventory and utility infrastructure mapping;
  • Investigates complaints;
  • Searches for deeds and property ownership;
  • Maintains electronic and hardcopy files of work sites and data collected;
  • Maintain survey supplies and re-order as necessary - stakes, hubs, nails, flagging, etc;
  • Keep survey equipment in good working order and clean (theodolite, transit, level, and rod, etc.)
  • Assists other departments as needed on routine surveying items;
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: This position involves work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing. Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures; do accounting work; and use measurement devices. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, noise and vibration; exposed to hazards of doing field work; and exposed to fumes, odors, and dusts.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of basic construction and civil engineering principles, practices and techniques; thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of land surveying and drafting; skill in reading blueprints and engineering designs; skill in the operation of GPS equipment; general knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, public and private agency officials and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school; any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree in engineering, drafting or surveying; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a license to practice as a professional land surveyor in the State of North Carolina; possession of a valid NC driver's license.

This position is "non-exempt" and is eligible for overtime pay.
