TEMPORARY LABORER
PUBLIC GROUNDS & CEMETERIES DIVISION 
HOURLY RATE: $12.25

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs responsible semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, maintenance and repair assignments involving the use of specialized tools and equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains and cleans equipment as directed;

  • Performs a variety of heavy manual work in connection with department operations;

  • May operate mower, weed eater, chain saw and/or other powered equipment in roadway, power line, water, sewer rights of way or grounds maintenance.

  • Work on assigned crew;

  • Use and know hand tools for various assignments;

  • Perform limited building maintenance, i.e. painting, simple carpentry and masonry tasks;

  • Loads and unloads work materials, supplies and equipment;

  • Trims, plants, removes trees, shrubs, flowers, bulbs, etc.

  • Follow all safety policies and procedures;
  • Must be able to read, write and carry out verbal instructions;
  • Performs other related duties.

JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: This position involves work requiring employee to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including noise, subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation; subject to job hazards including working around operating machinery and uneven surfaces; subject to coming in contact with cutting fluids and oils.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Some knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair tasks; some knowledge in the use of common hand and power tools required in the city; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and some experience in maintenance, repair and/or construction work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 

This position is "non-exempt" and is eligible for overtime pay.
