Summary
Coordinates and manages activities related to South Statesville (SS) and the Police Department, facilitates strategic planning processes, service referrals, and increase overall trust and collaboration between the community and Law Enforcement. Work is performed under the supervision of the Community Services Sergeant.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Coordinates and facilitates activities that garner trust between South Statesville residents and Statesville Police Department Officers;
- Works with Statesville Police Department Staff and Community Leaders;
- Identify community concerns or projects that require assistance from Code Enforcement;
- Answers questions from community members about Police Department events;
- Seeks opinions from citizens about police practices and identifies concerns;
- Presents recommended modifications to the Statesville Police Department Command staff based on program goals;
- Shares crime prevention information in various ways in various settings;
- Make presentations to residents, through neighborhood watch groups, homeowner associations and other public gatherings;
- Deliver crime prevention literature at community events;
- Consult with individual residents to assess current needed security concerns;
- Identify and address barriers to service and work with individual organizations and agencies to improve service delivery to at-risk or gang involved individuals;
- Develops and maintains working relationships between public agencies (law enforcement), non-profit organizations, and the community;
- Demonstrates effective communication skills with at risk or gang involved individuals and their families;
- Plans and facilitates meetings;
- Develops and implements public informational tools;
- Initiate and maintain complete collection of information, records, statistics, and facts related to South Statesville’s programs for evaluation purposes, and prepare reports as required;
- Report progress to City Council, law enforcement agencies, and South Statesville residents on a regular basis as required;
- Manage assigned programs, special projects, and effect improvements in operations;
- Make educational presentations to community groups;
- Collaborate with various departments, agencies, and organizations in order to implement assigned programs;
- Adheres to all pertinent safety and health regulations, departmental policies and procedures, local ordinances, and Federal and State laws;
- Operates specialized, complex equipment and department computer in performance of tasks;
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education and/or Experience
- Two years minimum management experience preferred involving program administration in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Human Relations, or other closely related fields.
Preferred Skills and/or Experience
- Experience in identifying grant opportunities and/or management of community improvement grants.
Job Related Physical Activity Requirements: This position involves light work requiring the employee to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures; do accounting, transcription, and extensive reading; use a computer terminal. This employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions throughout the year, including extreme cold and heat, vibration, and noise.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- General knowledge of the geography of South Statesville and Iredell County;
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
- Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures;
- Ability to work independently of others;
- Ability to work with the community, gang involved, and at risk individuals effectively;
- Basic grammatical, mathematical, accounting, business writing, public speaking, and case management and documentation skills;
- Advanced knowledge of common computer applications and operating systems including Windows based programs such as PowerPoint, Word, and Excel;
- Possession of valid N.C. driver’s license;
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing;
- Ability to effectively coordinate resources.
Working Conditions
Work in this class is performed primarily in an environmentally controlled office setting and employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
