SANITATION SUPERINTENDENT
Public Works Department - Sanitation Division
Salary Range: $64,355.20 - $106,184.00 (Starting Salary is commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience.)

Summary
The Superintendent performs difficult technical and intermediate administrative work overseeing the refuse collection and recycling activities of the city; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is exercised over all division personnel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises all activities in the Sanitation Division.
- Prepares reports on operations, accidents, activities, and other reports required or requested.
- Requisitions, interviews, and recommends personnel to fill vacancies and makes all personnel assignments within the division.
- Establishes necessary records and files consistent with the management of the division.
- Plans, leads, and controls the efforts of subordinates in their duties to achieve maximum utilization of staff and equipment.
- Plans, organizes, and evaluates present work programs and plans and recommends staff and equipment including loose leaf removal.
- Prepares division budget and monitors expenditures including maintaining all essential safety and operating supplies;
- Data entry of cart serial numbers assigned to each address, data entry on commercial and business accounts and establish the collection schedule, data entry for brush collection and cart purchase charges.
- Develops and monitors division operating procedures including continuous safety program;
- Develops collection routes in response to demands for service and population shifts.
- Deals with the public and answers questions and complaints.
- Seeks new and innovative and cost-effective ways to collect and dispose of refuse and recycling.
- Attends workshops and conferences to stay abreast on environmental issues.
- Encourage ongoing training for all employees within the division.
- Regularly attends meetings with the Keep Iredell Clean committee and the City’s technical review committee.
- Evaluates the work performance of employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- Extensive experience in refuse collection and recycling activities, including moderate supervisory experience
- Experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of refuse collection and recycling requirements and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of materials, methods and practices of refuse collection and recycling.
- Thorough knowledge of the various types of equipment used in the collection and recycling of refuse.
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees and the general public.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid N.C. Class B Commercial Driver's License
Job Related Physical Requirements
This position involves sedentary work requiring the employee to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position includes the use fingers and hands
reaching, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures, and visually inspect small parts of machinery to detect small defects.
