GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs difficult skilled work in the operation of sanitation equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.  Supervision may be exercised over assigned crew members.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Operates as an equipment operator using a backhoe, power boom, crawler loader, street sweeper, asphalt roller
  • Operates truck transporting sand, stone, gravel and supplies;
  • Operates a light truck in carrying crew, tools, equipment and supplies;
  • Reports repairs needed on toters to supervisor;
  • Assists in loading and unloading equipment and materials;
  • Services and makes minor repairs to equipment;
  • Operates light equipment or works as a laborer as assigned
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, lifting, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to operate trucks and other equipment.  An employee in this position may be subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration; hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts; fumes, odors, or gases, and oils; and subject to wearing a respirator during leaf collection season.  An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing sanitation trucks and equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of sanitation equipment; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and equipment; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to operate all types of automotive equipment; skill in the operation of a variety of small and medium equipment.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation of motorized equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of an appropriate valid commercial driver's license.
 
This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
