MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

Salary Range: $30,978.48 - $51,114.54

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs complex skilled work in the operation of heavy motorized equipment; does related work as required.

Work is performed under regular supervision.  Supervision may be exercised over assigned crew members.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Operates a motor grader on construction and maintenance work;
  • Operates backhoe and track loader, rubber tire loader, tandem dump trucks, boom truck;
  • Checks working condition of equipment, services it regularly and makes minor repairs to equipment;
  • Consults with supervisors concerning problems of grading, leveling and other maintenance problems, recommends solutions based on experience gained as a skilled motor equipment operator;
  • Reads and checks grade;
  • Performs duties without direct supervision.

JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to operate machinery and heavy equipment such as trucks and backhoe.  An employee in this position will be primarily exposed to outdoor environmental conditions including extreme cold and heat, vibration and noise; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to hazards including working around operating machinery and uneven surfaces; subject to coming in contact with cutting fluids and oils.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing trucks and heavy construction equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and construction equipment; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to operate all types of automotive equipment; skill in the operation of a variety of small, medium and heavy equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and extensive experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of an appropriate valid NC commercial driver's license.

This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
