Work Schedule: Initially on 8 hour days for training (40 Hours Per Week), then will be 24 Hour Shifts On Duty, 48 Hours Off


General Statement of Duties: Perform intermediate protective service work in fire suppression; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work;
  • Performs cleanup and overhaul work;
  • Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment and cleaning fire station and grounds; helps check all equipment and apparatus; performs simple and routine maintenance;
  • Participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical materials and attendance at scheduled drills and classes;
  • Inspects, cleans and maintains fire hoses, pumps, hydrants and related equipment;
  • Maintains physical fitness by actively participating in PT training;
  • Assists in the enforcement of fire codes; may instruct in training classes;
  • Prepares and submits required reports;
  • Conducts station tours for the public, schools and community;
  • Assists in conducting pre-planning studies;
  • May be assigned to a special area or projects as necessary, i.e. Hazardous Material Response, High Level Rescue or Confined Space Rescue;
  • Performs other firefighting and related emergency tasks consistent with standards for the position;
  • Tests hoses, breathing and related firefighting equipment;
  • Substitutes as Fire Lieutenant when required.

Minimum Education Requirement:

  • Graduation from High School and/or Equivalent (GED)
Within 6 Months of Employment:
  • Obtain NC Firefighter I & II Certification
  • Obtain NC Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or equivalent

Job Related Physical Activity Requirements:  This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to operate machinery and perform skilled tasks of a non-repetitive nature. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold; subject to hazards including exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to exposure to oils and cutting fluids; required to wear a respirator; and may be subject to frequently working in close quarters. An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: General knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire suppression; general knowledge of fire prevention and pre-planning strategies and techniques; general knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; general knowledge of technical firefighting principles and techniques; general knowledge of techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression; thorough knowledge of the street systems and physical layout of the City; general knowledge of hazardous materials and accident extrication principles and techniques; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public; possession of mechanical aptitude.

Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Class B N.C. driver's license or ability to obtain; must meet and maintain the minimum training and experience qualifications for the position as established by the department.

 

Working Conditions: Employee is subject to both inside, and outside environmental conditions including dangerous and extreme temperatures for a prolonged amount of time and may partially, or totally obscure one's vision. Employee is subject to noise, vibration and hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working in high places, exposure to high heat and exposure to chemicals. Employee is subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system and skin. Required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing device. Employee frequently works in close quarters and areas which could cause claustrophobia. Employee may be exposed to blood or blood-borne pathogens when providing emergency medical services. Work is performed under emergency conditions and may involve personal hazard

This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.

STATESVILLE FIREFIGHTER APPLICATION PROCEDURES

 

In order to process a Firefighter Recruit Application, each Candidate must:

  1. Submit a completed Application & Resume (1) page, to the City of Statesville's Human Resources Department through the City of Statesville's Online Applicant Stack Process. Candidates must apply through the above referenced process by going to www.statesvillenc.net
  2. Provide a copy of a DD 214, if you served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
  3. Provide a copy of a High School diploma, GED or College Degree.
  4. Provide a copy of a Firefighter Certification Transcript or transcript from an IFSAC approved training agency. In N.C. this transcript can be obtained through the www.ncdoi.com website.

Only after Steps 1-4 have been satisfactorily completed will your application be reviewed by the Human Resources Department and submitted to the Statesville Fire Department for review.

If you satisfactorily complete steps 1-4 as stated above, you will be selected for additional screening which will include a physical abilities test to be administered by the Statesville Fire Department. A physical exam will be required prior to participating in the physical abilities test.

Selected candidates will be interviewed by the Statesville Fire Department’s Candidate Assessment Team. The Candidate Assessment Team will establish an eligibility list and appointments will be made from the list.

Statesville Firefighter appointees serve a minimum, mandatory six-month probationary period during which time they receive intensive training.
