ASSISTANT SANITATION SUPERINTENDENT

Salary Range: $39,537.06 - $65,237.12

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs difficult technical work overseeing and supervising the work of sanitation crews; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision.  Supervision is exercised over all division personnel in the absence of the Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Schedules businesses for commercial pick up;
  • Checks crews in and sees that they are properly started on routes;
  • Investigates complaints and sees that corrective action is taken;
  • Monitors the City's recycling program;
  • Prepares and delivers collection and recycling carts;
  • Confers with residents and businesses regarding division policies and regulations;
  • Checks routes to see that work has been properly performed;
  • Checks condition of trucks used by division;
  • Inspects containers reported unfit for use;
  • Returns items picked up in error by collectors;
  • Assists in laying out routes in new areas of the City;
  • Keeps records and prepares reports on division activities;
  • Periodically bi-weekly divisional payroll and submit to Finance Department;
  • Periodically evaluates performance of assigned personnel;
  • Assists in hiring process for divisional staff;
  • Check on brush or trash piles to determine user fee.

JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves light work requiring the employee to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include reaching, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data figures, and visually inspect machinery to detect small flaws and problems.  An employee in this position may be subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration; hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts; fumes, odors, or gases, and oils.  An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Thorough knowledge of refuse collection and recycling requirements and procedures; thorough knowledge of the methods and equipment used in solid waste collection and recycling; thorough knowledge of the hazards of the work and necessary safety precautions; ability to plan and supervise the work of sanitation crews; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and considerable solid waste collection experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid Class B N.C. driver's license

This position is “exempt” and is not eligible for overtime pay.
