POLICE TELECOMMUNICATOR - NIGHT SHIFT

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs intermediate technical and responsible clerical work on an assigned shift dispatching police personnel usually in response to emergency situations; does related work as required.
 
Work is performed under regular supervision.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Receives incoming calls, classifies as to type, obtains detailed information and relays information;
  • Operates two-way radio, telephone, recording devices and computer terminals;
  • Receives complaints in person or by phone;
  • Receives and transmits messages by radio and maintains radio log;
  • Forwards information to state agencies and special units;
  • Operates CAD system; enters and extracts data from system;
  • Monitors telephone and 911 phone lines;
  • Operates paging system console;
  • Maintains wrecker log book within computer;
  • Registers bicycles and mopeds;
  • Operates standard office and computer terminal equipment;
  • Enters and updates warrant information;
  • Enters and updates entries in DCI and NCIC;
  • Maintains vehicle repossession log;
  • Performs driver history, checks reference citations for DA's office; 
  • Assists with maintaining geographical data base.
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves sedentary work requiring the employee to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, reaching, pushing, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures; do extensive reading; and use a computer terminal.  An employee in this position will not be substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions but will be subject to noise and working in a confined area.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  General knowledge of the methods of operating the communication system; general knowledge of radio and telecommunications procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; some knowledge of federal and state regulations governing transmission by radio; ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to operate standard office equipment and personal computers; ability to speak distinctly; ability to deal with the public under stressful conditions.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school and some experience in radio communications; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of N.C. DCI certification or ability to obtain within 6 months probationary period.
 
This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
