GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs intermediate clerical work reading water and electric meters; does related work as required.
 
Work is performed under regular supervision.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Reads water and electric meters on an assigned route, and records reading;
  • Performs special readings and detects leaks;
  • Assists with cut-offs as needed;
  • Prepares diagrams showing location of new services;
  • Checks to see that meters and visible connections are correctly installed and functioning properly and reports defects or tampering to superior for further action;
  • Re-checks certain readings when requested to assure correct readings;
  • Fills out work orders on damaged meters and malfunctioning meters;
  • Folds leaf bags;
  • Takes bills to Post Office 
  • Get read-and-leave-on tickets; 
  • Move boxes, furniture or other items to warehouse or storage as needed; 
  • Clear building sidewalks and doorways during inclement weather; 
  • Other related duties. 
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects.  Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Employee must be able to walk 10 miles or more per day.  Sufficient visual acuity is required to visually inspect small parts involved in the operation of machines to determine if small defects are present, prepare and analyze data and figures, use a computer terminal, and do extensive reading.  An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold; subject to hazards including exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; subject to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation; subject to exposure of oils and cutting fluids; and may be subject to working in close quarters.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  General knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in the reading of meters; general knowledge of the geography and street locations of the City; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; ability to deal tactfully with customers; ability to work all day under varying climatic conditions.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid N.C. driver’s license.
 

This position is “non-exempt” and is eligible for overtime pay.
