WASTE COLLECTOR (Full-Time)

Salary Range: $32,760.00 - $54,059.20

Summary
The Waste Collector performs responsible unskilled work in the collection of solid waste; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Picks up garbage toters, bags, boxes, etc., dumps into trucks and operates packer equipment.
- Cleans areas around toters.
- Directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas.
- Picks up limbs, leaves and other refuse from curb side.
- Picks up paper, debris, and litter on public property.
- Assists some disabled citizens by picking up trash on site.
- Helps others with minor tasks as required.
- Picks up recyclable materials.
- May repair and deliver containers.
- May operate truck in absence of operator if qualified.
- Helps deliver collection toters and recycling containers.
- Assists with cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
- Completion of the tenth grade and some experience in the performance of heavy manual work.
- Experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possession of a valid N.C. driver’s license is desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Good physical condition.
Job Related Physical Requirements
This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include the use fingers and hands, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, lifting, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
Working Conditions
An employee in this position may be subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration; hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts; fumes, odors, or gases, and oils; subject to wearing a respirator during leaf collection season; and subject to working in narrow or confined spaces.
An employee in this position could be "reasonably anticipated" as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
